Abraham Edward Pearson departed this earthly life on Tuesday, January 10, 2023. Born in Darlington County, SC, he was the 9th child born to the late Reverend Thomas and Oree Howard Pearson. He was educated at Cain Elementary School and Mayo High School. Religion was a large part of his upbringing both in the home and at Nathan Temple in Hartsville where his father pastored. After graduating in 1962, he attended Fayetteville State College. This was interrupted by The Cuban Missile Crisis when he joined the US Navy in 1962. Upon completion of basic training in San Diego, CA, he was stationed in Long Beach, CA. aboard the USS Taluga – AO62. From there he was deployed to Vietnam for three tours of duty. He was honorably discharged at Treasure Island Naval Base in October, 1966, in San Francisco.
In January 1967, he reunited with his eldest brother, the late Thomas Paul Pearson where they established Pearson’s Appliances Sales and Service, a retail business in the Western Addition, at 787 Haight St. There he met the love of his life, Diane Freeman and to this loving union, they were blessed with one beautiful daughter, Cicely Pearson. In March of 2009, after 42 successful years, he sold the business and he and Diane retired to Darlington. In his spare time he attended family reunions, enjoyed bowling with his club Strikeforce, fishing and playing dominoes with his friends.
Abraham, fondly referred to as "Abe," had a smile that could brighten any space. Everyone he met was drawn to his presence by his charismatic charm. His warm and loving laughter was infectious when he and his siblings were together. His hands could fix any device and were as huge as his heart.
In 2011, Mr. Pearson joined St. James United Methodist Church. He was an active member of the trustee board, eventually heading the board for two years. He was the go-to person for maintenance and care of the church, relying on his knowledge as an appliance engineer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in life by his siblings: Margaret Brisbon, Joseph Pearson, Alphonso Pearson, Thomas Pearson, and Elijah Pearson. Abe is survived by his wife, Diane Pearson and daughter, Cicely Pearson, siblings: Mary Wingate, Pearly Pearson, Francina Hannibal, James Pearson (Doris), John Pearson (Georgia), Wallace Pearson (Juanita), Anita Pearson, Willie L. Pearson (Bettie), Barbara Hyman, Robert Nathaniel Pearson (Maria), several nieces, nephews and over 100 first cousins, Mayo High classmates, other relatives and friends.
