It is on the sixth day of this month that we have assembled to pause and pay tribute, celebrating the life of our beloved Bettie S. Pearson. For this day was recorded long before we knew or could ever fathom such a monumental loss. But be ye comforted in knowing that God is too just and wise to make any mistakes, and he has taken a beautiful angel to become a part of his mighty kingdom. In the wee morning hours of May 2, 2023, Bettie Scarborough Pearson departed earth and took residence in her heavenly home, free from sickness, sorrow and pain. Well done thy good and faithful servant- The Master has welcomed you home.

Mrs. Bettie Scarborough Pearson was born in Sumter, SC on August 9, 1946. She was the daughter and one of six siblings born to the late Henry and Eliza Scarborough.

Bettie was educated in the Sumter County School System. She was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Sumter, SC and South Carolina State College in Orangeburg, SC, where she obtained a B.S. degree in Home Economics. Her first teaching position was also at Lincoln High School. She completed coursework at the University of South Carolina to obtain licensure in administration. Bettie was a beloved educator who worked for many years at Mt. Pleasant High School in Elliot, SC and Lee Central High School in Bishopville, SC. Bettie was extremely passionate about helping and nurturing her students as evidenced by her 40 years of service as an educator prior to retirement. Long after her role in the classroom was completed, she was still viewed as a mother and grandmother figure to many within her family, church and community. Bettie was a member of many professional educator organizations during her tenure as a teacher.

On June 21, 1970, Bettie joined in holy matrimony Mr. Willie L. Pearson of Darlington, SC and to that union bore two sons.

Bettie was a long-time loyal member of St. James United Methodist Church in Darlington, SC where she served as a member of the Hospitality Ministry and Pastor Parish Relations Committee. She was a member of the South Carolina State University Alumni Association, the Lincoln High School Alumni Association, Jack and Jill of America and a Life Member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

In times of leisure, Bettie (Boot Camp Bettie) enjoyed event planning, playing hostess and decorating for local events. Bettie was a giver. She gave selflessly of her time to include hosting events for her friends and family and cooking delicious meals for those around her.

Those left to cherish her memory are her loving and devoted husband Willie L. Pearson; two wonderful sons, Nicholas (Keisha) Pearson and Nygel (Majoria) Pearson; four precious grandchildren, Nathan, Grace, Grayson and Addison Pearson; a sister Lucille (Elijah) Cabbagestalk and a brother Sam (the late Hattie) Scarborough, both of Sumter, SC, and a host of many other close in laws, nieces, nephews, friends and family.
