She was educated in the public schools of South Carolina, Florida, and New York. She was a 1959 graduate of Charles Evans Hughes High School in New York City.  She completed further studies at The University of South Carolina-Sumter.

Ms. “Gomery”, as she was affectionately called by some, dedicated her life to taking care of her family, helping others and being a strong pillar for those in need. She worked taking care of children, the sick and the infirmed. While living in Sumter, Mrs. Montgomery worked as a Ward Clerk at Tuomey Hospital and childcare teacher at Kinder Kare and Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church-Child Development Center.  She accepted the Lord as her personal Savior at a very young age.  She was a lifelong member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church where she served as a deaconess and a visionary founder of the Junior Nurse's Aide Ministry. Upon relocating to Indian Land, South Carolina, she connected and fellowshipped with Gold Hill AME Zion Church in Indian Land.

She married the love of her life, David H. Montgomery, on December 26, 1959.  To this union, three sons were born: Reginald, Darren, and David R. Montgomery.  She enjoyed bowling, reading, shopping, vacationing, and walking on the beach.

Those left to cherish her memory and inspired by her life are her husband of 62 years, David H. Montgomery, of the home; her children, Darren A. Montgomery (Lucinda Rondeau) of Conway, South Carolina, David R. (Tarsha) Montgomery of Indian Land, South Carolina, and Visla M. (James) Ealy of Charlotte, NC; one brother-in-law, Hilton Shirley of Hartsville, SC; six grandchildren, Kaila J. (Jason) Martinez of Durham, NC; Philip M.J. Ealy of Charlotte, NC; Brittany N.
